I've never been on a diet. I'd look through the meal plans and think "I don't even want to eat half of that stuff anyway". Or I've heard ones where food and calories are severely restricted and know that's never something I've wanted to do. It sounds hideous!! I don't know about you but I suffer from the well known phenomenon of hangriness. I was always tired and grumpy anyway so why would I want the opportunity to be even more tired and grumpy, and add hungry to the mix?
Your body needs a certain amount of calories to function so in my opinion going below that threshold is just an unrealistic way to lose body fat. It's not sustainable. What's the first thing most people do when they finish their diet? They go straight back to the same eating patterns and behaviours that caused the weight gain in the first place.
What would you say if I was to tell you that we encourage you to eat more to lose more? You'd probably think we're a little cray cray right?? Well I eat more in a day now than I ever have. Just ask my colleagues. And I've kept my body fat percentage in a healthy range. I have a ton more energy, I sleep better, I move better, I don't feel like everything is such a drag, I eat what I want to - note that my WANTS have changed now but they're all still a choice.
I believe that it's all about consistency, it's all about empowering yourself with choices, it's all about doing the behaviours that are going to help you achieve your goals...and maintain them.
Focus on putting more activity into your day. Choose an activity you love. It could be dancing, it could be biking, it could be running or walking, it could be joining a community Fit Club or it could be a group 24Fit Challenge or taking the kids to the trampoline park and having a go yourself, by the way this is great cardio, check out my video on my Facebook page - not bad for 36 aye? It could be Swiss Ball Drumming.
If you're just starting out it could be doing small things like 15 squats every time you go to the toilet (remember you'll be going more because you're drinking more water now aren't you) it could be parking further away from your destination and walking at a brisk pace, it could be taking the stairs instead of the lift. There are so many options.
Focus on eating more whole foods, less processed foods, and reducing added sugars. Eating regularly, every 3-4 hours, base your meals and snacks around protein and fibre (keep an eye out for my blog post next week about about protein) and enjoying them. Just be prepared, there are plenty of delicious healthy options available and I highly recommend having a nutrition shake for breakfast to start your day.
Develop an awesome mind set and it will make everything else that much easier. Remember it requires daily practice, you can't do it once and expect results. I have a different mind set now than I did two years ago and it really helps, trust me on this. I react to challenges differently, my first thought is usually how do I resolve this, make this happen rather than one of blame or "I can't do this".
Surround yourself with people who are doing what you want to do. People who are supportive and encouraging of your goals. People who have already achieved them and know your struggles. We have this type of community at our centre, our members get exercise, nutrition education AND are surrounded with a motivating and supportive group of people who all want to see you achieve.
How would you feel if you could achieve that kind of lifestyle? Focusing on your behaviours, not putting time limits on your weight loss, feeling amazing every day and getting the results as a side effect. Because remember, losing body fat is a side effect of a healthy active lifestyle just as gaining fat is more often than not a side effect of unhealthy eating and a sedentary lifestyle.
So what would more energy, less body fat and the ability to move better bring to your life?
