Early start…3am. Wayne cleaned my chain and bits yesterday and I got on the bike this morning. It went like a dream. So easy it almost felt weird.
We took off at 5am, in the cool air. And rode 38km. The sun rose and we rose another 20km. Then another 20km. Then it got hot and bloody hard!!!! I’ve never felt anything like it!!! I started to feel a little bit sick. It was hard work. Had been going 30-35km/h, then I struggled to do 20km/h. Very seriously was thinking about what I was going to do if it got too much harder.
Finally we stopped for lunch, I found some shade and had my shake. Just what I needed!!!
It was pretty hot so the call was made to have more water stops. That was the best decision ever!!! Every 5km. That was the best decision ever. In the heat, every stop I wet my towel around my neck to keep cool, by the next stop it was nearly dry. The best stop was whena lady came out at the first 5km stop and brought us all ice-blocks!!! That was amazing!!
But more importantly, the 5km was just what was needed mentally. The ride became a break down of 5km increments. That’s manageable right? Decent breaks in the shade before getting back on the bike. Mind set is everything!! Of course there are times where you have to listen to your body but I knew I had more.
I also had amazing support. I biked with Chris and John who really helped. And Shaun and Megan were at all the 5km water stops and they were amazingly supportive too. My own stubbornness plus the support of these guys in particular (everyone is great though) plus the water on my towel is what got me through.
I’m freaking tired and sore now and it’s definitely time for bed. But I made it!!! 167km in ridiculous Australian heat (max 44.5%).
Day 1 complete.
