That one thing is to make sure you are drinking enough water. And here is why:
Water plays a huge part in your bodily processes including processing nutrients and metabolic processes so that energy from your nutrition (calories) is metabolized efficiently and your body can do the things it needs to do in order to lose weight. Among other things of course, water is essential for many reasons and is my number 2 top pick after oxygen and before food.
There's a process that your body goes through when it is dealing with sugars in your blood stream (that's a blog post for another day) but quite simply any sugars your body can't deal with in the normal way will get stored as fat. So cutting out sugary drinks and drinking water is killing two birds with one stone so is a great reason to drink more water if weight loss is your goal.
You especially don't need the electrolytes that come in many supermarket brands bottles, a lot of times those are packed full of sugar to make them taste nicer and while our body needs sugar it does not need it in the quantity that a lot of us are getting it in.
1. I don't have time. In my opinion that kind of a lame excuse. Now if you often forget and get to the end of the day then one suggestion is setting an alarm every hour on the hour. It's a good opportunity to get up from your desk as well and walk around as well if you have a desk job.
Another option is to have a target, you may have a 2 litre drink bottle or 1.5 litres or 750mls, how many of those do you need to get through each day to reach 2 litres?
2. I don't like the taste of water. In the nicest possible way, you've got to get over that excuse. Oxygen then water are vital in that order, this is what your body needs. Yes, sometimes the tap water does taste chlorinated so you have the option of buying bottled water or if you're in the Hutt Valley go down to Petone and fill some bottle up from the spring there. Or if you're really struggling then add something to alter the taste. Maybe some lemon or lime juice, add some berries, maybe cucumber. Do not add sugary flavors, that defeats the purpose.
