What's the big deal about proteins anyway? Protein is a macro nutrient which means you need relatively large quantities each day. Good for muscle maintenance, repair, and building. How does it help with achieving a healthy weight?
Read on for a tip that you could implement into your day.
Each time you eat focus on protein and fibre based snacks and meals. One way protein works is by making you feel satisfied. Add fibre alongside your protein and you'll feel satisfied and fuller for longer, helping you to consume less while getting quality calories. Don't worry about the carbs, if you're eating mostly whole foods you're going to get those anyway. And yes, you need carbs. It's the body's preferred source of energy. What your body doesn't need is the low quality high energy carbs that are in a lot of people's daily food consumption.
Back to proteins. For example, and I'm a little bit boring here as I have the same thing most days for my snacks, I'll have carrot sticks, a hand full of mixed nuts or almonds and maybe I'll throw in a little bit of edam or feta. Another snack I have is chopped up apple or other piece of fruit, with some greek yogurt and some chia seeds.
I have found that by doing this I manage to cut out a lot of added sugars and I also don't get that craving for an energy hit if I don't leave it too long between eating. By focusing on proteins and fibres my energy levels stay more constant, I don't get the highs and lows I used to with my blood sugar levels going up and down when I ate food that were higher in sugar. I tend to go predominantly for whole foods now which helps and my blood sugar levels throughout the day stay in the normal range.
(Note: be aware of your portion sizes, you'll find that you don't need as much as you may be used to and part of the reason people gain weight or struggle to lose it is due to over consumption).
Are you up for a challenge? If you are then your challenge is this. Start building your food choices around proteins for the next week. I do have information on protein sources and serving sizes that I make accessible when people choose to work with me otherwise, if you're willing to look for the information, then Google is your friend.
