I was reminded of this concept again when chatting with a friend who has set herself up as a business coach. I’d first heard about it when I was doing a nutrition course (this was the perfect place to learn about it because many of us live below the line when making choices about what goes in our mouths).
It’s a fairly simple concept. When you are living above the line you are operating from a place of ownership, accountability, and responsibility. You are living an empowered life and understand that YOU, and only you, have the ability to change the direction of your life from within.
When you are living below the line you are living in a place of blame, excuses, and denial. You feel as if you have no control, you play the victim and believe that everything that happens to you is a result of external influences.
Below the line is where I used to live. I was just along for the ride not realizing that I could control the direction my life took. I always used to ask “why me? Why is everything so hard? When are things going to get easier, when are things going to change, when will I be able to be happy?”
You may have heard this story before but that mind set started to change one Canadian summer day in 2011 when my brother and I drove a prototype Pontiac Z (I think, I know it was a prototype and I know it was a red convertible, and I know it was fun to drive). He was driving on the way there loving it, I was cracking up about how the under bit of my arms were flapping in the wind (ah, it’s the little things in life right?).
After the drive we were walking from the car park to find our friends and during the conversation he told me in a way only he could “Helen, you have to stop playing the victim”. That observation really made me stop and think. It was also the day my life started to change as I chose a different path in life.
Fast forward to 2014 and I attended a personal development course where things really started to click in to place. Until then I was still hovering just under the line knowing that I could change things but not sure how to do it. This course helped me to smash through that line and start living above it. I don’t know if I could have done it without the support of other people who were already there, sharing their knowledge, providing good examples, holding me accountable and keeping it real.
That year I started my first home business and really started asking the question “this is what I want to achieve so how do I make it happen?” instead of “this is what I want to do” and then coming up with a big long list of excuses as to why I couldn’t do it.
THIS ONE QUESTION IS LIFE CHANGING!!!
Fast forward to today and I now have two home business, I get to spend more time with my children, I’ve lost the weight I had put on over the years and continue to keep all my numbers in a healthy range. I have more energy, I have a vision of where I want to go in life, and I have a great support network of people who can help me get there. People who I know in person and people I have never met. And I’m happy. Happy enjoying the journey.
I would not have the opportunity to do that if I was still living below the line.
So the big question we should all ask ourselves when "life happens" and we feel like we're not getting anywhere..."Am I living above the line or below the line?" And then take action.
